The Medical Defence Union (MDU) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to its members’ interests.
Founded in 1885 by doctors to protect the interests of their fellow professionals, it remains a mutual company owned by its members, which include doctors, dentists, and other healthcare professionals.
It is the market leader for medical defence in the UK, with over 200,000 individual and healthcare provider members.
The MDU offers its members expert guidance, personal support and robust defence in addressing medico and dento-legal issues, complaints and claims. Its customised services range from legal assistance to indemnity to appropriate CPD.
In November 2024 the MDU launched an MGA – MDU Insurance Solutions – to address the challenges facing private healthcare providers.
Backed by Lloyd’s capacity, MDU Insurance Solutions’ flagship product – MDUConnect – enables healthcare providers to gain access to the organisation’s expert guidance, support and defence. In the event of a claim arising about patient care, it also includes a Lloyd’s of London insurance policy.
