Tokio Marine Kiln

Tokio Marine Kiln is a leading international insurance underwriting business operating in the Lloyd’s insurance market. Part of one of the world’s largest insurance groups, it is backed by 60 years of specialist expertise, including 17 years’ operating in Asia.

The Tokio Marine brand has had a strong presence in the London Insurance market since starting direct underwriting operations in London in 1880, just a year after it was founded in Japan.

In 2008, Tokio Marine Group acquired Kiln, bringing together one of the most prestigious specialist insurers in the Lloyd’s market with the global scale of one of the largest insurance groups in the world. The move was Tokio Marine’s first international acquisition and spearheaded the continued international expansion of the group.

Today, Tokio Marine Kiln is recognised as a top 20 brand in the London Insurance Market, as ranked by Insurindex, and is synonymous with leading the way on claims and underwriting service, based on the latest Gracechurch Research.

  1. We have been awarded Gracechurch SQM for the eighth consecutive year.
  2. The TMK claims team leads the market in its relationships in claims, and is top quartile across all aspects of service, with one broker commenting that the team stands out for its “Depth of knowledge and proactive approach to claims.”
  3. TMK is the leader in Cyber underwriting, according to the 2023 Gracechurch London’s Leading Underwriter report, with Paul Gooch also leading the individual ranking (along with the award for being the Underwriters’ Leading Underwriter). Separately TMK also led in Property.

Matthew Shaw
CEO

Matthew Shaw is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tokio Marine Kiln (TMK).

Matthew joined TMK as Chief Underwriting Officer in May 2020, and was the architect of a transformational underwriting strategy that has seen TMK’s performance continue to strengthen. He is passionate about future-proofing the business, with a keen focus on building the company’s value-centric culture.

Matthew has four decades of experience in the insurance industry, having started his career at Lloyd’s in 1982, working in Aviation and Non Marine lines, underwriting both direct and reinsurance business. He became Deputy Underwriter for Syndicate 340 in 1993 and Active Underwriter in 2000. Matthew then joined ACE (which later joined with Chubb) in October 2002 to manage the company’s European reinsurance business. Prior to this he was with Chubb where, in his most recent role, he was divisional president of global markets.

Matthew has also served as a member the Lloyd’s Aviation Underwriters Association and ABI committees, and on the board of Tokio Marine Canada. He was also a board director of Gravett and Tilling syndicate management and, from 1987, was a director of St Paul at Lloyd’s. He is currently on the board of the Lloyd’s Market Association.
