The Medical Defence Union (MDU) is addressing a complex and evolving set of challenges impacting the healthcare indemnity sector.
Pierre Campbell, Head of Underwriting at MDU, highlighted a rise in both the frequency and severity of claims, which he says is “continuing to increase.”
According to Campbell, collaboration is crucial: “We have to work together with MDU members, broker colleagues, and the insurance industry to mitigate and reduce claims.”
The sector faces other challenges, particularly in adapting to changes in global medicine and healthcare. Campbell points to several factors driving these shifts, including an ageing population and a rise in chronic diseases, which elevate risk across the board.
Compounding these issues, healthcare systems worldwide are grappling with significant staffing shortages, placing additional pressure on organisations and, by extension, on those providing indemnity coverage.
“The workforce shortage and increased demand on healthcare services impact organisations deeply,” says Campbell, “That pressure is inevitably felt by those indemnifying these entities,” he continued.
As healthcare continues to evolve, Campbell said the MDU remains committed to supporting its members through an integrated approach to risk management in an increasingly challenging environment.
