The Innovation Imperative: Why brokers matter more than ever

As the global risk landscape becomes increasingly complex, the role of the broker is more critical than ever. Yet, regulatory narratives — particularly in the London Market — continue to frame broking as a commoditised “distribution cost,” failing to capture the sophisticated advisory, placement, and advocacy functions brokers perform every day.

To address this, The London and International Insurance Brokers’ Association (LIIBA) has initiated a focused research collaboration with Gracechurch and Trimstone Partners, designed to generate a clearer, data-driven understanding of the broker’s role in the modern insurance value chain. The resulting study set to launch ahead of, and showcased at, the CIAB Conference in September, will form the basis of a landmark publication tentatively titled “The Innovation Imperative: Why brokers matter more than ever.”

A New Lens on Broker Value

At the heart of this initiative is a simple but vital objective: to move beyond cost labels and show, with clear proof points, how brokers create tangible value for clients and the wider market. From uncovering and structuring risk, to enabling access to global capital and supporting innovation in product design — brokers are not just intermediaries; they are central to making the insurance system work.

This report aims to illustrate how brokers:

  • Enable better risk discovery and mitigation
  • Drive efficient and innovative risk transfer
  • Improve client outcomes, from claims to retention
  • Add measurable economic value across jurisdictions
