The results are in. Our friends at Gracechurch have sifted through more than 1000 underwriter nominations for their upcoming Leading Underwriters Report, and have ascertained the five essential characteristics which serve to set them apart from the rest.

So, what qualities really constitute the varied skillset of these high-flyers?

#1 Knowledge

The ability to understanding and foresee risks, with a high level of intelligence and technical proficiency.

Our underwriter pick:  Chloe Kahney, QBE.

“She is very knowledgeable, always does her research before client meetings.”

Our celebrity double: Bill Gates.

“The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.”

#2 A problem-solving attitude

Collaborative and people-oriented, with an acute attention to detail. Hands-on, helpful and determined to find a solution…

Our underwriter pick: Ed Mitchell, MS Amlin.

“In depth knowledge of recall exposures and ideas for innovative solutions to meet our client needs.”

Our celebrity double: Detective Columbo.

“Just one more thing…”

#3 A discernible customer-focus

Flexible, curious, and personable, taking the time to grasp customer needs with down-to-earth and grounded approach. Great presentational and social skills also come in clutch here!

Or underwriter pick: David Fitzpatrick, Ascot.

“Willingness to consider specific deals. Listens and tries to help.”

Our celebrity double:  George Clooney.

I watch Batman & Robin from time to time. It’s the worst movie I ever made, so it’s a good lesson in humility.”

#4 Pride in the delivery of service

Professional, responsive, determined and decisive.

Our underwriter pick:  Andrew Lewis, IQUW.

“Just fantastic to work with.  Service levels & openness behind factors driving changes make him a joy to work with.  All round great guy.”

Our celebrity double: Tricia Griffith, CEO of Progressive Insurance.

“Just keeping up with the pace of the industry is not enough for us – we want to lead. We are constantly improving and getting smarter. We listen to our customers to learn what they want..”

#5 Above all, a trusted leader

Experienced, consistent, disciplined and respected by colleagues, clients, partners, competitors and friends alike.

Our underwriter pick:  Jeremy Chappell, Liberty Specialty Markets.

“Trust the leader.”

Our celebrity double:  David Attenborough.

“There is no question climate change is happening. The only arguable point is what part humans are playing in it.”
